WW2 Gun Batteries

Since the advent of gun powder, defensive warfare has been dominated by the gun battery. Many of these WW2 gun batteries can still be seen today.

Normandy

Lying on the northern coast of France, Normandy is a region steeped in history.

It was from here that in 1066, an amphibious invasion of England was carried out, as depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry. Almost 900 years later the route of this invasion was reversed when allied troops landed on its shores during the Operation Overlord D-Day landings.

Slapton Sands, Devon

In the run-up to the D-Day landings in WW2, Slapton Sands and a large part of the South Hams, to the west of Dartmouth, was evacuated and used as a live firing exercise area. On the night of 28th April 1944, off the shores of this beach German E-boats caught a convoy of US landing craft relatively undefended. The result was carnage and a coverup that lasted decades.....

Lavernock Battery, S.Wales

Originally built in 1870 to protect Cardiff and Bristol, the battery at Lavernock Point, near Penarth, S.Wales is still remarkably intact today.

Barry, S.Wales during WW2

Barry Docks, west of Cardiff in south Wales, was a prominent Bristol Channel port during WW2, being used for importing the essential materials and food needed to support the island nation of Britain, while also serving as an embarkation point for American troops.
