Following the retreat from Dunkirk in May 1940, the skies over Britain became the frontline, defended by 'The Few' pilots of the Royal Air Force.
By 1943 the RAF ( and the USAAF) were taking the fight to the enemy, flying from bases around the UK.
Never before in the history of warfare could a fighting man have breakfast in the comfort of their mess, and face death and terror in the face of the enemy, before once more returning to the comfort of their own bed once more.
Thousands of RAF air and groundcrew served within the UK, carrying out not only aircraft related duties, but staffing Radar and other technical defence installations.
